Does "Within Walking Distance" mean 3km up a steep muddy track? Does "Close To Public Transport" mean so close you are woken by the platform announcements? Does "Central Location" mean you don't get the choice about early mornings? I think everyone was surprised by the amount of interest shown in where we'll be staying - good, bad and indifferent. By popular request, here's the separate section on accommodation. Our aim is self catering, on a budget of A$500/£200 per week - we know it won't always be possible, but we can only try.
A few pointers - CLEAN is my clean, not theirs. FULLY EQUIPPED means everything you would expect to find in any kitchen. WALKING DISTANCE is given in time rather than kilometers, at a comfortable stroll. A brisk walk would be about half the time, a gentle stroll a while longer. Not all rooms in most hotels are equal. There are good and bad, huge and tiny. I only review the room we stay in, and 99% of the time, we check out the room we'll be in before checking into the hotels. We usually look at 5 or 6 before making a decision - for that reason, most of the reivews are fairly good ones as we already basically know what we're getting. One other important point - if there are two (or more) consecutive reviews in one town, it generally means that we found a much better option the next day, so be sure to read the one with the latest date.
UPDATE NOV 2008 - Due to the rollercoaster ride the Australian dollar is back on, all prices are now given in the currency we paid. Also, we are doing a lot of backtracking to places we've been before so there will be gaps - I will post updates only if the accommodation has changed significantly in price or quality.
